Shiatsu Treatments at Zen Health & Wellness Centre
Shiatsu is a traditional Japanese healing art, which can help a wide range of conditions, including specific injuries to more general symptoms of ill health. Shiatsu is a deeply relaxing experience and regular sessions can help to prevent the build up of stress and anxiety in our lives reducing the risk of poor health.
The philosophy underlying shiatsu is, that vital energy (known as Ki in Japanese, Qi in Chinese and Prana in Ayurveda) should flow freely in the channels commonly called meridians. For various different reasons the flow of Ki may stop flowing freely or become blocked, which in turn produces symptoms of ill health.
Your Shiatsu practitioner will consider your state of health, the symptoms you are experiencing and, depending on your constitution, and general energy levels will use a variety of techniques to improve your energy flow. These can include gentle holding, pressing with fingers, thumbs, palms, elbows, knees or feet along the meridians, and more dynamic rotations and stretches as appropriate.
Symptoms will gradually improve as the flow and general quality of Ki begins to move more easily.
Shiatsu is an holistic therapy that works on the complete being. It can work on many levels: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.
A Shiatsu treatment session will usually last around one hour; however you should allow longer for your first treatment as there will be an initial consultation, where your practitioner will take a detailed case history. This is completely confidential and enables your practitioner to develop a complete picture of your health according to the principles of oriental medicine and provide the best treatment for your needs.
The treatment usually takes place on a futon on the floor, although it can be done sitting on a chair if you are unable to lie down. You will remain fully clothed.
